Abstract
カメラで撮影した文字や、自由に手書きをした文字を、人間と同程度の精度を保ちつつ手軽に入力することは、機械による認識にとって未だに実現されていない大きな課題の一つである。本稿では、認識対象の文字パターンに、付加情報と呼ぶ認識を助ける情報を埋め込んで利用することにより、従来の文字認識と比べてより高精度な認識を実現する方法について述べる。我々は、このような文字パターンを、人間にも機械にも読めるという意味でユニバーサル・パターンと名付けている。ユニバーサル・パターンを用いると人間のための文字と機械のためのバーコードを併記する必要がなくなるため、外観の改善など種々の利点を得ることができる。
